Anthony Lo Surdo SC in Papua New Guinea – August 2024

Anthony Lo Surdo SC has accepted an invitation by Deputy Chief Justice Kandakasi (Chair of the National and Supreme Courts of PNG ADR Committee) to speak at the Advanced Mediation Skills Training (for PNG Fully Accredited Mediators) on 15 August 2024 in Port Moresby on the topics, “Online Mediation Procedure and Protocols”. The topic will draw on procedures and protocols that Anthony developed during Covid lockdown and which the PNG Courts are in the process of adapting for use.

He will also speak on “Mediation Strategies to take Parties towards Settlement” exploring, as its name suggests, approaches to mediation that enhance prospects of resolution developed since Anthony first trained as a mediator in 1993 and which he has deployed in over 400 complex, multi-party mediations since 2009. He will be delivering a truncated version of these topics at the inaugural PNG National Mediators Conference on 16 August 2024.

On 20 August 2024, Anthony will be speaking at the 10th Asia Pacific Mediation Forum, 2024 (https://pngcje.gov.pg/apmf/) in Port Moresby. The Papua New Guinea Centre for Judicial Excellence (PNGCJE) whose Chair and Deputy Chair are Chief Justice Sir Gibuma Gibbs Salika, KBE, CSM, OBE and Deputy Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi, CBE are hosting the Forum which is organised in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Mediation Forum. The theme of the Conference extending over 3 days is “Regional Challenges, Regional Solutions, Global Outcomes: Using Mediation to Resolve Environment and Climate Change Disputes.”

Speakers include practitioners, academics and members of the judiciary from across the globe and region including from PNG, Australia, the Philippines, Tonga, Tuvalu, New Zealand, Nauru, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Indonesia.

Anthony will be speaking on a panel exploring the “use of technology saving on the environment and expediting dispute resolution” and, in particular, on the subject of “cross border disputes and online mediation, challenges and solutions”.

Anthony is an experienced, internationally qualified, mediator. In recognition of his experience, he has been appointed by the PNG National and Supreme Courts as a Fully Accredited Mediator and Mediation Coach and holds a practising certificate as a mediator in PNG, one of only a handful of non-residents to be so credentialed.
